Rushtam and Sohrab.
Rustam and Sohrab: A Tragic Tale from the Shahnameh
Prologue: The Warrior and the Princess
In the days of ancient Persia, Rustam, the mightiest of warriors, rode his steed Rakhsh across distant lands. One evening, weary from battle and hunting, he arrived at the kingdom of Samangan. The king welcomed him with honor, offering him food and shelter.
That night, the king’s daughter, Tahmineh, entered Rustam’s chamber, veiled and trembling.
Tahmineh: "O mighty Rustam, I have heard of your bravery, your strength, and your victories. I have long admired you from afar. I wish to bear a son as strong as you. Take me as your wife, even if only for a night, for I desire no one but you."
Rustam, taken by her beauty and boldness, agreed. They were married in secret, and before dawn, Rustam departed, unaware that Tahmineh carried his child.
Sohrab’s Rise
Years passed, and Sohrab, the son of Rustam, grew into a warrior of astonishing strength. Raised by his mother, he knew he had a powerful father but not his name.
One day, he confronted his mother.
Sohrab: "Mother, I feel greatness in my blood. Tell me, who is my father?"
Tahmineh, fearing that Rustam might take him away, lied.
Tahmineh: "He was a great warrior, but he is gone now. Your fate is your own, my son."
Sohrab, eager for glory, gathered an army to march against Persia, unaware that he would soon face his own father.
Father and Son Meet in Battle
The Persian king, terrified of Sohrab’s might, summoned Rustam, the empire’s greatest champion. The two warriors met on the battlefield, neither knowing they were father and son.
Sohrab looked at Rustam with admiration.
Sohrab: "You are strong, old man, but today, Persia shall fall. Surrender, and I shall spare your life."
Rustam laughed, gripping his sword.
Rustam: "Boy, you speak boldly for someone so young. Let us see if your sword is as sharp as your tongue!"
The battle began. For hours, they clashed, shaking the earth with their blows. Sohrab, young and powerful, nearly overcame Rustam, but the older warrior used his experience to survive.
At last, Rustam saw an opening. With a mighty thrust, he drove his dagger into Sohrab’s side. The young warrior fell.
The Truth Revealed
As he lay bleeding, Sohrab’s voice trembled.
Sohrab: "Old warrior… I pity you, for you have slain your own son."
Rustam’s heart stopped.
Rustam: "What do you mean? Speak, boy!"
Sohrab: "My mother told me my father was the mightiest warrior in Persia. I now see that it was you… my father… my killer."
Rustam cried out in agony.
Rustam: "No! This cannot be! Someone bring a healer—save my son!"
But the Persian king, fearing Sohrab’s power, refused to send aid. Sohrab’s fate was sealed.
A Son’s Forgiveness, A Father’s Sorrow
As his life faded, Sohrab reached for his father’s hand.
Sohrab: "Do not weep, father. Fate has played its cruel hand. I only regret that I never knew you."
Rustam held his son, his tears falling onto Sohrab’s face.
Rustam: "My son, if I had known—if only I had known!"
With a final breath, Sohrab smiled faintly.
Sohrab: "Perhaps we shall meet in another life."
And then he was gone.
Rustam, the great warrior, the undefeated champion, knelt in silence, broken not by an enemy’s blade, but by fate’s merciless hand.
Epilogue: The Price of Fate
The battle was won, but for Rustam, no victory could erase his grief. His son had perished by his own hand, a cruel twist of destiny that would haunt him forever.
Thus ends the tale of Rustam and Sohrab—a story of power, pride, and a fate too cruel to bear.
